The network side of Mbone
To receive the pre-recorded broadcasted test pictures of Maeshowe sunset
of January 2nd, 1998, a few
conditions must be met:
-
the user workstation has already Mbone connectivity
That is the easiest, you don't have to do much, perhaps only put the
multicast applications on the user workstation.
-
the user workstation is connected to a LAN, but no Mbone connectivity yet
You should consult your local network manager and ask if he is able
to get an Mbone feed from the ISP of your company.
Depending of the possibilities of the ISP there are a few options:
-
the ISP is able to provide an Mbone feed
the local network manager needs to have a workstation/router
that is able to run mrouted/DVMRP/PIM to receive the Mbone feed.
-
the ISP is able to provide an Mbone tunnel (using liveGate1)
In that case use multikit instead
of sdr and multicast applications on the
user workstation to connect to this tunnel.
-
the ISP does not want to provide an Mbone feed or an Mbone tunnel
A pity, the only option is that another providers wants to give you
an Mbone tunnel using liveGate1,
but the chances are small!!!
-
the user workstation is using a dial-up connection, but no Mbone connectivity
yet.
You should consult your ISP
-
if he can provide you an Mbone tunnel (using liveGate1).
In this case use multikit instead
of sdr and multicast applications on the
user workstation to connect to this tunnel.
-
If he does not want to provide a tunnel, you could ask another ISP to provide
you with an Mbone tunnel, but chances are small!!!
The application side of Mbone
There are lots of places on The Internet where one can get software for
using Mbone. A good archive for a lot of workstation types, can be found
at UKERNA. The applications
needed for viewing/listening the test pictures from Maeshowe are: sdr
(session directory), vic (video) and rat (audio).
Are you using Windows95 or Windows NT4.0, I would advice you to use
the following tools:
It is possible that in the Maeshowe setup (Dec. 1998) another
application will be used (like Real ),
because these other applications need less bandwidth, so that also modem
users (from 28.8 kbit/s) can watch with relatively nice quality.
There is not a full list of ISP's that provide Mbone (if I have forgotten
you, please let me know).
A list of European
ISP's and USA
ISP's (quiet old!) is available.
Note on LiveGate: If the viewer has a dynamic
address from a certain range, the configuration of liveGate should be something
like this:
for (set hostNum 1) {$hostNum <= 254} {incr hostNum} {
liveGate_createTunnel 123.234.210.$hostNum
}
