Achavanich
Achavanich (south west part) is a stone horseshoe. The dimensions
of the horseshoe are: length 59 +/- 3 m and width 26 +/- 1 m (the accuracy
is not great, because the length has been determined by pasing). At this moment 34 stones were visible.
A global layout of the stone horseshoe can be seen in a
picture, remember it only
presents the major aspects.
The dimensions are a little bit different from Burl, A. 1995 (a length of 69 m).
The reason is not known (remeasurements are thus needed), but also on the number of stones Burl is
inconsistant (one moment he talks about 34 and after some sentences
he talks about 27+14 [instead of something like: 19+6+9]).
The azimuth of the longest side (running north to south) of the horseshoe is:
161o25' +/- 15' (using
the magn-true north2 method).
Burl, A., 1995 talks about 160o (no accuracy provided).
The altitude of the northern horizon is 1o +/- 5' and of the southern horizon
2o +/- 5'.
