Comet Stone
The Comet Stone including its satellites can be seen in a
picture. The satellites are a little bit
enhanced, by colouring their contours (white for the left one and
black for the right one). It really seems that the satellites are broken off
(although there is no prove of this in literature).
The azimuth of the
Comet Stone seems to be: 317o45' +/- 25' and the azimuth
of the
satelites seem to be: 46o45' +/- 25' (both using magn-true
north1). They are almost perpendecular to each other.
The altitude of the horizon for the satellites is on the north side:
45' +/- 5' and for the Comet Stone on the west side: 30' +/- 5'.
One can see here the differance between what Thom presents (black) and what
can be seen in practice (green). The azimuth directions in the picture are only for
general direction, see above for more accurate figures.
No stone wall (Burl, 1988) has been found (due to coverage by grass and/or
no probing has been done).
Some references in literature:
- Burl, A., 1988 (using picture, no accuracy available)
Comet Stone: some 350o
satellites: some 70o
- Thom, A., 1978
Comet stone: 314 o +/- 30'
In the picture of this book, it looks like the Comet Stone is some
322o, but the text
is talking about 134 + 180o +/- 30', so the picture is assumed wrong for
determining the azimuth of the Comet Stone.
satellites: 45o +/- 1o (using the picture)
- Frazer, J., 1925
Comet Stone: 306o (alignment on Watch Stone)
satellites: 43o 30'
So Burl is certainly wrong.
Beside the above stone alignments, there is another thing that can be seen on the
Comet Stone itself. There are groves (some
5 cm wide and 2 cm deep)
on the northern and southern face of it. The angle is some
44o +/- 1o with regard to the horizontal plane.
