Goal of the pilot
This project plan describes all the activities, timing
and costs involving the set up of a pilot around a
megalithic cam-page at Maeshowe.
The main goals for doing this pilot, which ends Feb. 1, 1998, are many
fold:
-
Gain knowledge on the prehistoric alignment of Maeshowe
-
make unattended records on tape and file of the sun set around winter solstice.
-
experiment with mock-ups of the blocking stone and a lower initial part
of the passage.
-
get a better understanding why Maeshowe was build on this location and
with this particular alignment (did the sun also shine on th ebackwall
around mid November?).
-
check the computer model made of the horizon, passage
and chamber of Maeshowe.
-
Promote Maeshowe and The Orkney islands
-
let people view the sunset live over The Internet.
-
make videotapes of the sunset for promotional reasons
-
promote the touristic properties of Maeshowe and The Orkney islands
-
Determine the continuation of the project
-
determine the best position of the camera in case the project will be continued
-
determine the organizational form (incl. PR and copyright) in case of a
continuation of the project.
To reach the above mentioned goals, a high quality color camera will be
positioned in the mound. This signal will go towards a video grabber in
a PC. This PC will be connected through a telephone link towards The Internet.
People on The Internet will be able to view every 30 seconds a new picture
of the sun within Maeshowe chamber/passage.
